The first big project we tackled after we bought our house was turning an old wood shop/garage into a music recording studio. Although there were a million other projects that we needed and wanted to do, we chose this one first because it would be a source of income for us once it was complete. As first-time homeowners with a scary new mortgage, this was really important to us!
This was our first experience with remodeling and renovation. We didn’t even own any tools when we first started this project! Thanks to the help of some amazing friends we were able to learn a lot, and turn this neglected space into our dream studio.
Graig and Joe discuss the options for the space.
October 2009: One of our first trips of many to Home Depot.
November 2009: Moving in more supplies.
November 2009: The trash pile grows! One of the first things we learned about renovation…not only do you have to buy lots of new stuff, you have to pay to get rid of the old stuff!
November 2009: This is how we spent our Thanksgiving!
November 2009: The walls start going up. We also removed windows, the garage door and skylights to help with soundproofing.
November 2009: Patching the existing drywall in the control room.
November 2009: A wall with a double window is framed out, dividing the control room from the live room.
November 2009: A view from the control room looking toward the live room.
December 2009: A late night with no heat, working on the drywall mudding.
Before: The bathroom before we replaced everything and tiled.
June 2010: After, the bathroom remodeled.
May 2010: re-roofing the studio.
June 2010: The trim is up, walls are painted and we start moving in.
June 2010: Since expenses added up quickly, we settled on a temporary vinyl squares to cover the floor in the live room.
October 2010: Graig oversees the mixing board at our first party in the new studio.
October 2010: Kristin Hersh performs a private show.
October 2013: We install hardwood floors in the live room.
October 2013: We added stained, wooden slats to the walls in the live room.
Really love this studio build. What are the dimensions of the rooms?
